Dr Ophillia Ziwenga

I am also a mother, wife sister, cousin, niece, daughter, friend and granddaughter. I have always been drawn to people who do for others. Particularly those who focus on people that lack in opportunities and access. In general, women tend to be less privileged than their male counterparts. It has always been my wish to participate in matters that uplift others for I strongly believe that I am where I am due to the spirit of Ubuntu that prevails in my motherland, Zimbabwe. Growing up my late mother always used to amaze me by her gift of giving. She was widowed during the liberation war and left with seven children to look after. My mum was teacher, farmer with a small grocery store in the village. She used those meagre resources to send us (her seven children) and other cousins and some children in the village to school. She would give some groceries to struggling families from her shop and more. In other words, it was an unofficial giving platform, without the glare of publicity. Siboniwe is my late mum’s middle name. It also happens to be so meaningful for what we are trying to do. It means “We have been seen/noticed or Taonekwa” in Shona.

I have always been keen to assist a group of marginalized women in my home country. There is no shortage of these. In addition, I have always been curious about the plight of people in the criminal justice system. I felt that females in the criminal justice system deserved some special attention during the Covid pandemic. It has been such a steep learning curve and very satisfying one too.

I am driven by a love for people and a strong desire for us all to be winners. I have a heart for every type of social underdog and a passion for challenging stigma and judgment. I strongly believe the women Siboniwe aims to assist should not be defined by the unfortunate choices that have landed them on the wrong side of the law, but should be supported to move forward with hope in second chances.

I believe that, as women, we are called to raise each other up and to strive to make the world a better place for all of us in spite of our histories.

OUR TRUSTEES

Delliah Khupe

I am a mother of two and part of Siboniwe Foundation Trust. Strong advocacy for helping those in need is my passion, especially women and the girl child. They are worthy and they matter. Everyone is created for a purpose, has a God given talent and is special. I strongly believe that we we can all tap into our strengths for the greater good. Hard work and zeal are my greatest strengths that help me push and thrive for those who looking for more. Like my sister, I was inspired by my widowed mother who had the gift of giving in our small community. With the little that she had, she advocated for charity and LOVE. I have the strongest conviction to continue with her legacy.
